Unnecessary Tattoo and Other Stains on a Stainless Steel HeartBy John L. Holgerson Order Now:
About the BookSeveral of the poems in this book were written during times when I was living on the Greek island of Hydra. The title poem, Unnecessary Tattoo, is not one of them. It had somewhat of an unusual birth in my hometown of Taunton, Massachusetts. Some years ago, I was sitting in the bar of a Mexican restaurant in Taunton with a few friends. One of them was the owner of a different restaurant who had recently celebrated her birthday. She mentioned that one of her birthday gifts was a gift certificate for a tattoo. It would be her first tattoo. I asked her if she had given any thought to the design of the tattoo. Without saying anything, she reached into her purse, took out a pen and began drawing the design on a paper napkin. As the design became apparent, I knew I would have to write a poem about it. And, over the next three months, I finished the poem that was later first published by the online poetry journal Page & Spine before it became the title poem of this chapbook. It describes the design I saw her draw on the napkin and its impact upon me. I have been told that many great ideas have come about as the result of conversations had in the bars of Mexican restaurants. I’d like to think that the poem Unnecessary Tattoo is one of them.
